Smells Like Teen Spirit

Smells like Teen Spirit is my second solo drawing exhibition at SOMA art gallery for contemporary art in the summer of 2019.

It is an examination of a never ending rite of passage through a visual narrative that draws links between a Freudian view of puberty and a male dominated dystopian Metropolis which – interestingly enough- seems to be stuck in a state of constant adolescence.

Borrowing from the iconic imagery of the teenage culture of baby boomers and generation X the analogy shines, obsession with guns, sex, drugs, aliens, particle colliders and ideals, to imperialist notions, hydrogen bombs, space races and world domination. The world has always been in the tight grip of a handful of bad boys boasting about their oversized plutonium driven manhood. And as Krypton crumbled on itself he will see to the demise of Metropolis and the wiping of Gotham.

Welcome to planet Testosterone.

The drawings consist of multilayered cutouts drawn in ink, watercolors and acrylics. The elevated drawings are reminiscent of butterfly collection boxes and popup children books.
